A common misconception is that a pet allergy is a reaction to animal fur. Instead, it is actually an allergic reaction to flakes of dead skin, saliva and dried urine from the pet otherwise known as pet dander. These allergens may flake off from an animal’s fur and become airborne, where it is inhaled by the allergic person and thus causing a reaction. Reactions can present themselves as rashes, itching is the skin, and swelling and irritation in the nose eyes throat and lungs. In asthmatics this can trigger an asthma attack.
If you cannot permanently remove a pet from the house, you could we recommend using a good quality air purifier with a HEPA filter. Air purifiers that incorporate sterilisers such as UV or Plasmawave technology would be beneficial too.
